House Update Part 3

Victory! We stuck to our move-in date and we’ve been living in our house for exactly two weeks. These two weeks have been exhausting, and there was a point I thought we’d never make it through all those boxes. Butttttt, with lots of help from one very organized mother-in-law and a lot of long days, we made it. We’ve got a couple big projects left and after that’s done we can focus on getting the place furnished and hanging all of our art.

The major project that remains is creating an entryway from our joint office (which is right off the kitchen) that will lead into the dining room. We think this will create a better flow, especially for all those parties we plan on hosting (a gal can dream). We ordered a set of double pocket doors and they arrived today. I’ll keep you updated on that in my next post. We’re also hoping to finalize our plans for custom built-in shelves for our family room, as well as a custom bar for our living room (for all the entertaining we’ll be doing!). Custom built-ins are expensive (what isn’t?), so it’s been taking longer than expected to find the right company for the job.

We got our blinds and drapes the other week which has given us some much needed privacy. We picked sheer white drapes for the living room and cotton/linen Roman shades for two of our three bedrooms. We didn’t rush to get blinds in the other rooms because we want to wait and see if we really need them. Guess what? Blinds are a fortune. I’ve always loved the sophisticated look of Roman shades but because ours have some linen to them and a corduroy-like texture, they’ve got more of a casual appearance which goes better with our house and personal styles. David was especially adamant at making sure nothing in our home felt overly formal.

Overall, repainting the house went well but the painters weren’t able to cover every imperfection of our wonderful but quite old home (built in 1952). I’m learning to see the imperfections as beauty marks. It’s a process.

We changed our outdoor porch light which made a HUGE difference, and I got a stylish outdoor mat. I’m also very happy I decided to splurge on a more modern kitchen faucet from FRANKE. It immediately made the kitchen feel more now, but not in an in-your-face trendy sort of way. We also just ordered these kitchen pendant lights from Pottery Barn to replace our existing ones which hang too low and from a plain old cord.

What else, what else… Our bed arrived from Restoration Hardware and designer David nailed it. I’m absolutely in love with it. It looks so amazing with our wallpaper and even better than I had thought with our refinished floors. We also received our nightstands and dresser from Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams. PS: I want virtually everything in that store. We also decided to keep our dining room table which we got three years ago from Mod Shop (another great store). I wanted one that could expand to seat 12 but everything was getting expensive and we love ours so much we figured we’d buy two different chairs for both ends and make an eight seat dining room table work for the next couple years at least. Our chairs are from West Elm and sadly the pattern has been discontinued.

Hope you like everything so far. Stay tuned for more updates and our powder room reveal once our sink comes in.
